Shedding light on the dark web

The Economist (07/16/2016)
  • The drug trade is increasing online on “cryptomarkets” (dark web/underground websites) such as Silk Road (estimated drug trade online has grown from $15M in 2012 to $150M in 2015).
  • Online drug market platforms route communications via several computers and allow money transfers using virtual currencies (i.e. Bitcoin) to help dealers/buyers remain anonymous.
  • Despite shipping barriers/risk, dealers flock to online markets to expand their customer base while buyers favor the high quality drugs available online.
