Is your mom warmer with her grandkids than with you? A new study says blame biology

  • An Emory University study found increases in areas of the brain associated with empathy when 50 grandmothers were shown pictures of their grandchildren.
  • The grandmothers underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), which measures changes in brain activity blood flow, while being shown images of their grandchild, another child they didn’t know, an adult they didn’t know, and the same-sex parent of their grandchild.
  • While empathy-related brain activity also increased when shown pictures of their children, grandmothers responded more emotionally to grandchildren.
