Counting the costs of America’s 20-year war in Afghanistan

  • Since 2001, at least 47,245 Afghan civilians and 69,000 (est) soldiers have been killed.
  • More than 2,442 US troops and 3,800 US private security contractors have also been killed.
  • Afghanistan war-fighting costs have totaled $815.7B and the US has spent an additional $143B on nation-building.
  • Nation-building costs include training and arming the Afghan military ($88 billion), education programs and highly-corrupt infrastructure projects ($36B).
  • After including $530B in interest on funds borrowed to finance the War, the US has spent $2.26 trillion on Afghanistan.
