Breakthrough discovery in plants’ DNA may lead to slowing aging process in humans

  • Arizona State and Texas A&M scientists recently identified the detailed structure of telomerase, the DNA that creates the compound structures at the tips of cells to prevent aging, by studying plants.
  • “Think of telomeres as the plastic caps on the ends of your shoelaces”.
  • Most human cells have very low levels of telomerase, which age as they divide (aging cells = aging body).
  • Researching long-living plants’ telomeres could yield insights into slowing down human aging and destroying cancerous cells.
