- On July 12th (1979), the Chicago White Sox hosted “Disco Demolition Night” in between a double-header.
- Seeking to boost attendance, the White Sox partnered with Chicago rock radio DJ Steve Dahl to promote the event charging attendees 98 cents and a physical disco record to destroy via explosives.
- The event attracted 70,000 people and incited a mass on-field riot as records were destroyed.
- While organizers attribute Demolition Night’s popularity to fears of disco replacing rock, others believe it was racism (many brought Black non-disco records).
