Social mobility in richest countries ‘has stalled since 1990s’

  • An in-depth OECD report found that income inequality has increased and social mobility has stalled across industrialized nations.
  • While France and Germany are more equitable societies, the poorest in the UK are more likely to move up.
  • In 24 developed nations, 33% of children with low-earning fathers will remain poor while most of the other 2/3’s will only slightly improve.
  • Still, almost everyone in advanced nations has benefitted from improving living standards and lifespans over the last several decades.
  • The OECD suggests governments increase education spending.
