Miami’s Other Water Problem

Bloomberg (08/29/2018)
  • Scientist’s forecast rising sea levels (climate change) will cover most of Miami by year 2100, destroying $200 billion worth of real estate (Zillow).
  • However, a more imminent threat is flooding from more frequent storms/hurricanes pushing toxins into Miami’s major aquifers (underground water processing plants), the city’s main source of drinking water.
  • Toxins derive from seawater, buildings, rocks, and also fecal overflow.
  • While seawater desalination may be Miami’s only option, it’s 2.5x more expensive than aquifer processing and energy intensive (emissions, global warming).
