Local COVID-19 hazard pay mandates are doing what Congress and most corporations aren’t for essential workers

Brookings (01/27/2021)
  • America’s frontline retail and grocery workers have earned little in additional hazard pay while their employers reap billions.
  • The 13 largest US retail and grocery chains earned an additional $17.7B in the first 9 months of 2020, up 42% from 2019.
  • Most initial hazard pay bonuses have phased out aside from Target and Costco ($15 hourly minimum wages).
  • In response, local governments in California and Seattle are mandating $4-5 hourly hazard pay.
  • However, timely universal hazard payments will need federal (government) relief funding.
