  • Colombian President Ivan Duque has struggled to eradicate coca fields since the World Health Organization declared herbicide used in aerial spraying carcinogenic.
  • From 2000-2012, Colombian coca production fell by 70%; it has more than tripled since 2013.
  • Armed groups growing coca have also started placing landmines on fields.
  • Decertification would also block Colombia’s access to multilateral (ie World Bank) loans.
  • America gave Colombia $457 million (aid) in 2018.
