France Considers Relaxing Its Archaic Broadcasting Rules

Bloomberg (08/14/2019)
  • Since the late 80s, French authorities have imposed restrictions on national TV broadcasting to protect French cinema.
  • Broadcast restrictions include not being allowed to show primetime movies on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and not being allowed to run commercials for books, movies or retail store sales.
  • Channels also can’t tailor commercials to the respective viewers’ location or demographic.
  • President Emmanuel Macron’s administration will consider easing targeted advertising and commercial restrictions, potentially generating an additional annual windfall of 360M Euros.
