Michael Porter Jr. injury: Explained by a surgeon and a jelly doughnut

SBNation (06/22/2018)
  • Michael Porter Jr. was projected as the #1 NBA draft pick before injuring his back 2 minutes into his college basketball career (Missouri).
  • Last November, he had a minimally invasive back surgery (Microdiscectomy) for herniated disks.
  • Injury was triggered by small tears in the outer layers of his back’s disks which resulted in leaking lubricating material and inflammation.
  • The leak is similar to jelly coming out of a doughnut after it’s squeezed/poked.
  • 2 year recovery.
  • Re-injury rates are 10-12% over 5-10 years.
  • Porter was drafted #14 by the Denver Nuggets.
