California heads toward requiring solar panels on all new houses

LA Times (05/08/2018)
  • California’s Energy Commission will vote and probably mandate that all new single and multifamily homes include solar panels (starting 2020).
  • Currently, 20% of California’s new housing includes solar panels.
  • Residential and commercial buildings contribute to 40% of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Affordable housing housing advocates complain that the law will drive up already-expensive housing prices.
  • In response, the Energy Commission claims utility bill savings (+$80) will outweigh higher average mortgage payments (+$40).
