US inmates stage nationwide prison labor strike over ‘modern slavery’

The Guardian (08/21/2018)
  • This week, US prisoner advocacy group Jailhouse Lawyers Speak announced that prisoners nationwide will refuse to work in protest of horrid living conditions.
  • Demands include better conditions, end to life imprisonment, and more rehab services.
  • The US Constitution (13th Amendment) forbids slave labor except as punishment during imprisonment.
  • More than 800K prisoners work everyday and are literally paid cents every hour.
  • Strikers risk punishment including solitary confinement.
  • The strike was triggered by a South Carolina prison riot (April 2018) that resulted in 7 inmates being killed.
