The market for driverless cars will head towards monopoly

The Economist (06/07/2018)
  • Uber, GM, Tesla, and Google’s Waymo lead the race in developing autonomous vehicles (AVs).
  • Machine Learning: Driverless car technology relies on large data needed to teach on-board computers how to drive, respond and react to external factors.
  • December 2016-February 2017: Waymo reported 3 collisions from vehicles driving 350,00 miles; GM reported 22 collisions from 132,000 miles.
  • Given their high cost, ride-hailing services will be the first mass-adopters of driverless cars.
  • Seeking as many rides in the shortest amount of times, services may develop effective traffic-reduction systems.
