- “Unconstitutional Infringement”: On May 11th (2018), the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of New Jersey legalizing sports betting (2014).
- Americans currently wager $50-60 billion on sports bets via illegal online services (ie Betfair).
- Initially resistant, professional leagues (NBA, MLB) view sports betting as a new revenue stream (propose 1% charge on all wagers) and TV ratings boost.
- Individual states must now approve ruling.
- Analysts forecast legal US sports betting will grow from $4.8 billion currently to $90 billion per year by 2023.
